 during the 1970`s the cost of a torn of fuel oil rose dramatically causing the emphasis in marine propulsion to shift from speed to economy. ,2.1, a modest reduction in speed and daily distance covered,result in a substaintial  saving in the cost of voyage bunkers, even in the older vessel . this emphasis on economical propulsion continues, with better hull designs ,ye more fuel efficient mainduced, and with eve wind assistance a throw back to the last century, being  revived in a limited capacity.

there remain today however ,tow proven and commercially viable method of propelling merchant ships,diesel engines ,or steam turbines.these two system are compare but each should be examind in more details, as both can be sub divided or linked with other closely related  systems.
